Grade Three Update
It was nice meeting with all of you during conferences. The children are lucky to have such supportive parents.
As usual we have a busy month ahead of us. The students have been working on the multiplication facts zero through five and will be having a test next Monday. Practice, practice, practice is the key to remembering the facts. They can practice on-line at www.sadlier-oxford.com. Click on Mathematics, then on Student Gr.3, and then click Math Practice. www.coolmath4kids.com is also a good site where you can print out fact cards as well as review the facts through games on the site.
Next week I will be assigning the class an animal report to culminate our study on animals. A report form will be handed out and I will review each step of the form with the children in class. A letter explaining all requirements will be coming home with the report form.
I know that the weather has been a challenge this year. It concerns me that we have had some very cold days and students have come to school in short sleeves and a fleece vest. We go outside every day unless it is raining. Please help your child dress appropriately for the weather. It can be very cold on our playground, especially for the morning recess.
Check back in a few weeks for more updates!

October, 2011
Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe that we are already into our second month of the new school year. Things have settled down quite a bit since the beginning of the year. The children have gotten into the third grade routine and classwork and homework are getting done with little to no intervention from me. I have been stressing the importance of taking time when completing assignments and doing a neat job.
In math we have completed place and value to the hundred thousands, and we have worked with money by comparing amounts, making amounts of equal value with different denominations, and finding the amount of change by either subtracting or counting up. We are currently working on important terms to know in addition such as addend, sum, inverse operations, and Commutative Property of Addition. We are learning how to estimate sums and will soon be adding four digit numbers with re-grouping. Helping your child review their addition facts at home will help them to become quicker and more proficient in their adding.
The class has had some hands-on learning fun in science. First they sorted and compared all the different sizes and types of leaves that were collected for homework. This week they observed a flower and then drew and labeled all of the parts. Ask your child to draw and label the parts of a flower. They should also be able to tell you how a flower gets pollinated and what happens after it is pollinated.
Several recent in class projects the children have worked on are their community wheels for social studies, an acrostic poem about autumn, with a torn paper autumn tree to accompany it, and some paper tube bats flying above our heads to put us in the Halloween spirit. All of these projects will be found “hanging” out in the classroom for the month of October.
Thank you for supporting our classroom library by ordering Scholastic books. Each time I send in a class order I receive points that can be used towards the purchase of books. As if that isn’t reward enough, every time a parent orders on line I also get a coupon for a free book. I am already busy looking for books to order with the earned points
With the colder weather moving in please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.
