Hello Families!
Can you believe that second term ends on Friday!? Here’s a brief update on life in 5th grade:
Alert, alert, alert: Nature’s Classroom is going to be here before we know it. Please fill out your child’s forms and send them in. Remember the deposit ($143) is due by February 10th, and the balance is due on February 29th.
Reading: We are wrapping up our unit, which was themed “Building Bridges.” We read several excerpts relating to this theme as well as improved our skills of generalizing, fact vs. nonfact, and creating main ideas.
Language Arts: We’re finishing our persuasive pieces and will be presenting them on Tuesday! I can’t wait to hear how persuasive their arguments will sound. We have already started the next unit’s grammar portion, which includes direct objects, subject/verb agreement, etc. Encourage your child to always practice his/her grammar!
Math: Yay! We’re beginning our chapter on fractions where we will be building off of the knowledge they gained last year! Please, please, please encourage your child to practice the math facts! The faster he/she knows them, the easier this chapter will be!
Religion: Now that we have Advent and Christmas under our belts, we will dive into the sacrament of Baptism. Your child may be asking you questions about his/her own baptism to reminisce on this special event.
Social Studies: The students have enjoyed this chapter, where we’ve learned about several explorers including Marco Polo and Prince Henry the Navigator. We will soon be learning about the early colonies.
Science: Biomes! We’ve begun learning about biomes, which the students will be creating group projects over the next couple of weeks. Encourage them to practice sorting the characteristics of each biome to help with organizing information.
Extra: Although it may not feel like the full swing of winter, we have a full swing of coughs and sneezes throughout our classroom. It would be helpful for each student to have his/her own container of hand wipes to aid in our germ-free room. Thank you!
As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to contact me at sgendron@worcesterdiocesek12.org.
Have a great week!

Dear Parents,
Wow, time is flying by for 5th grade! It’s hard to believe we’re already into 2nd term. Here’s what we’ve been up to:
Reading: We have just begun Unit 2, which incorporates the theme “building bridges.” The stories in this unit help us realize that our differences can build our connections with each other.
Language Arts: Persuade, persuade, persuade! We have concluded the grammar portion of our unit and are moving on to get ready for our persuasive pieces. Some of the topics the students have chosen are quite interesting! As we work on the writing process, I look forward to hearing their end results.
Math: We are enhancing our skills of division and are becoming experts! We will be learning divisibility rules and estimation with division. Please continue to encourage your child to practice his/her math facts-all FOUR operations!
Religion: Recently, we’ve been working with the Beatitudes. The students have enjoyed playing Beatitudes memory. We are able to reflect on the Beatitudes all year long, since truly are statements of how we should live!
Social Studies: We’ve had fun learning about the 4 early tribes of North America. Ask your child about some unique hairstyles, totem poles, and doctors!
Science: Plants have been our main topic for the chapter. From what they’re made of to how they reproduce, we’ve covered a lot of information! Remember that the Science textbook has a website (www.pearsonsuccessnet.com) with activities for the students to do. The class access code is 5EF2A 2C06413097E2845.
Extra: Pen Pal Projects are due Tuesday! Students are more than welcome (and encouraged) to bring in their project and present on Monday, if they are ready. I am so excited to see the projects!
Gentle reminder about Nature’s Classroom forms. The initial check off is due this
Friday, November 18th! All forms are more than welcome before due dates. A giant thank you to a few families that have already turned in everything! Wow!
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to e-mail me at sgendron@worcesterdiocesek12.org.
Have a very happy Thanksgiving next week!

Dear Families,
Happy New Year! Our 5th Grade year is going to be full of learning, growing, and having fun! Here are some important parts of our classroom:
The Morning: The first 20 minutes of our school day are extremely important. Children need to be seated in their classrooms by 8:45a.m . Tardies will be strongly enforced. We highly recommend that students arrive to school for 8:30 a.m. Each day, the children have about 15-20 minutes of morning work to complete. This typically includes writing and math. This time also allows students to feel relaxed and ready for the day! Unfinished morning work will carry over to be homework.
Homework: Homework is given every night. Students are to record their homework in their planners. The homework should always be completed neatly and thoroughly. White lined paper should be used if handwritten (in cursive, of course!), but it may be typed.
Academics: We have high expectations for our students and expect each student to put in his/her best effort. Every Monday, after school until 4 p.m., I will hold Study Group for students that would benefit from extra review. It will start on Monday, September 12th. If it is cancelled, you will be informed either by a note or a phone call. Study group is a time to review material to enhance understanding, not a time to complete homework. If there is no school (either holiday or weather related), Study Group is not re-scheduled. If a student plans on attending Study Group, he/she needs to send a note with information regarding the student being picked up at the Office at 4 p.m. or going to Extended Day afterward. A student without a note is not allowed to attend.
During each term, you will be updated on our academic topics through a newsletter.
I hope to see you at our “Back to School” night so that you can learn even more about our class! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to e-mail me at sgendron@worcesterdiocesek12.org , send a note into school, or call (774-276-0021).
We’re in for a great year!
